At 18, India's Gukesh D Becomes 18th World Chess Champion, Surpassing Kasparov's Record
Dec 13, 2024, 08:45 AM
Indian chess prodigy Gukesh D, at 18 years old, has become the world's youngest and 18th world chess champion by defeating China's Ding Liren in the FIDE World Chess Championship 2024 held in Singapore. By achieving this feat, Gukesh surpasses Garry Kasparov's record as the youngest undisputed world champion. His victory in the dramatic match has ignited widespread acclaim, including congratulations from Indian officials such as Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur. Gukesh's mother, Padmakumari, expressed her disbelief and joy, saying she "couldn't believe it and cried for 10 minutes." His mental coach, Paddy Upton, highlighted Gukesh’s character off the board, describing him as a "champion human being." Grandmaster and coach Vishnu Prasanna noted Gukesh's seriousness about chess since he was 11 years old and emphasized the inspiration he provides to young players. Gukesh has been a rising star since becoming a Grandmaster at the age of 12, and his triumph fulfills his long-held ambition to become the youngest world champion. He was awarded prize money of over Rs 11 crore, and his success has led to increased interest in chess among the youth in India.
