Lauren Boebert, Eric Burlison Lead Bill to Abolish ATF Amid Director's Resignation

Republican lawmakers, led by Representatives Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Eric Burlison of Missouri, have introduced the "Abolish the ATF Act" to eliminate the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The legislation, supported by members of the Second Amendment Caucus, aims to protect Second Amendment rights and address concerns about the ATF's regulatory overreach. Boebert criticized the agency for its actions, stating, "The ATF should be abolished before they eventually abolish our Second Amendment." Burlison echoed similar sentiments, arguing that the ATF's mission overlaps with other federal agencies and is unnecessary. The bill has garnered support from several Republican co-sponsors, including Andy Biggs, Mike Collins, Mary Miller, and Paul Gosar. The initiative comes amid broader conservative efforts to challenge federal gun regulations and follows controversies surrounding the ATF's enforcement practices, such as its handling of pistol brace rules, firearm dealer licenses, and past incidents like Ruby Ridge, Waco, and Operation Fast and Furious. The proposal also coincides with ATF Director Steven Dettelbach's resignation, effective January 18, ahead of President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration.
