Speaker Johnson and Trump Walk Back Statement on Repealing CHIPS Act, Williams Confirms
Nov 1, 2024, 09:55 PM
Speaker Mike Johnson initially signaled his support for repealing the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act, which invests in new manufacturing plants and creates thousands of jobs in states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, North Carolina, Georgia, and Arizona. Johnson's statement, which he claimed was in alignment with former President Donald Trump, was met with criticism, highlighting the Act's role in reshoring essential manufacturing and strengthening the U.S. competitive position against China. However, Johnson later walked back his remarks, stating that the CHIPS Act is not on the agenda for repeal and apologized, claiming he misheard the question. Representative Brandon Williams confirmed Johnson's apology. This incident marks the second time in a week Johnson has had to retract policy comments. The CHIPS Act also has origins in the GOP through Senator Todd Young.
