Sep 18, 2024, 01:32 PM
The WNBA has officially announced the addition of its 15th franchise, which will be based in Portland, Oregon. The new team is set to begin play in the 2026 season at the Moda Center. This marks the return of the WNBA to Portland, which previously had a team, the Portland Fire, from 2000 to 2002. The expansion team will be owned and operated by RAJ Sports, led by Lisa Bhathal Merage and Alex Bhathal. The owners of the Portland Thorns are also involved in this new venture. The announcement comes as part of the WNBA's broader expansion strategy, which recently included new teams in Golden State and Toronto. The franchise fee for the Portland team was a record $125 million.
