DOJ Seeks $100M From Ship Owner Over March Baltimore Bridge Collapse That Killed Six
Sep 18, 2024, 03:19 PM
The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit seeking over $100 million in cleanup costs and punitive damages against the owner and operator of the cargo ship Dali. The ship, which struck and destroyed the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore in March, caused the deaths of six construction workers and significant disruption to the region's transportation network. The lawsuit accuses the ship's owner and operator, Synergy & Grace Ocean Private Limited, of negligence and mismanagement, alleging that the vessel was in poor condition and had known electrical problems before the incident. The Justice Department described the collapse as 'entirely avoidable' and attributed it to a series of foreseeable errors made by the ship's management.
