VisitU.S. House Advances Bill to Force ByteDance to Divest TikTok or Face Ban
Apr 18, 2024, 11:10 AM
The U.S. House of Representatives is advancing legislation that would require TikTok's Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to divest its ownership of the social media platform or face a potential ban in the U.S. This initiative, strongly supported by House Speaker Mike Johnson, has been included in a broader package of national security bills. The bill has been revised to allow the President to extend the divestment period by an additional 180 days, making it more likely to pass in the Senate. ByteDance now has up to one year to comply once the bill is enacted, an extension from the previous six-month period.
