The study, led by Crits-Christoph et al., involved genetic analysis of more than 800 surface samples collected from wildlife stalls at the market. The findings suggest that humans first contracted the virus from animals sold at the market, with raccoon dogs being identified as a potential source. This new evidence refutes earlier claims and supports the natural spillover theory, contradicting the lab leak hypothesis. The study also highlighted the presence of Lineage A and Lineage B of the virus, with DNA analysis playing a crucial role.
