WHO Announces Arrival of 99,000 Mpox Vaccine Doses in DRC Amid Surge in Cases
Sep 4, 2024, 09:00 AM
The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that the first shipment of mpox vaccines will arrive in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) within days, following a surge in cases of the Clade 1b strain. Over 18,000 suspected cases and 629 deaths have been reported this year. The head of the DRC's mpox outbreak response confirmed that the first delivery of vaccines is expected on Thursday, with a second delivery on Saturday. The WHO aims to stop the ongoing mpox outbreaks in Africa within the next six months. The vaccines, donated by the EU Commission, will be deployed by the DRC's Ministry of Health this weekend. The first shipment includes more than 99,000 doses.
