Chinese self-driving cars have quietly traveled 1.8 million miles on U.S. roads, collecting detailed data with cameras and lasers. These vehicles, owned by a handful of Chinese companies, have navigated streets in areas like greater Los Angeles and CA roads, often without much scrutiny. During the time of the spy balloon incident, around 30 cars equipped with mapping technology were observed in Los Angeles. In contrast, automakers in China, including Tesla, must pass special 'data security' tests to operate in certain locations. However, there appears to be minimal oversight over the data collected by Chinese self-driving cars in the U.S. The report was highlighted by Fortune Magazine, noting that the cars use sensors to navigate.
