UK Develops Quantum Clock to Reduce GPS Reliance, Deployable in Five Years
Jan 2, 2025, 01:49 PM
The UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) is developing the country's first quantum atomic clock, a groundbreaking technology aimed at enhancing military operations. This ultra-precise clock, which loses less than one second over billions of years, will reduce reliance on GPS systems that are vulnerable to jamming or disruption by adversaries. The quantum clock is expected to improve navigation, missile guidance, and encrypted communications, offering a strategic advantage in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations. The technology is projected to be deployable within five years and could eventually be miniaturized for use in military vehicles and aircraft. Maria Eagle, the UK Minister for Defence Procurement, highlighted the clock's potential to strengthen operational capabilities while supporting industrial and scientific progress and high-skilled jobs. The Royal Navy has also been involved in testing the technology, which aligns with global efforts in quantum innovation. The project has received over £28 million in funding and involves collaboration with partners such as Infleqtion, Aquark Technologies, and Imperial College London.
