Biden Administration Allows Ukraine to Strike Targets Within 100 km of Russian Border in Self-Defense
Jun 22, 2024, 01:00 PM
The United States has allowed Ukraine to use American-supplied weapons to strike targets within 100 kilometers of the Russian border if it is acting in self-defense. This policy change permits Ukraine to target cities such as Bilhorod, Kursk, and the outskirts of Bryansk, as well as aircraft that threaten Ukraine. However, the restriction prevents Ukraine from hitting key Russian airfields. Ukrainian officials have expressed a desire for the U.S. to lift these limitations, particularly for the use of long-range ATACMS missiles. U.S. officials have not confirmed the specific 100-kilometer limitation, stating no specific radius restriction exists. The policy, reported by The Washington Post, aims to enable Ukraine to defend itself while preventing escalation of the conflict. Meanwhile, Russians are launching guided bombs into heavily populated areas of Kharkiv. The Biden administration's policy continues to prohibit Ukrainian forces from striking legitimate military targets in Russian territory within range of Ukrainian HIMARS.
