The College Football Playoff (CFP) selection committee, chaired by Warde Manuel, has decided that teams not participating in conference championship games will not be re-evaluated for their playoff rankings. This decision effectively secures Alabama's position above Miami, Ole Miss, and South Carolina in the rankings, as these teams have completed their regular season schedules. Manuel highlighted that Alabama's record of 3-1 against top-25 teams and 6-1 against teams above .500 was superior to Miami's 0-1 and 4-2 records respectively. This stance from the committee means that Miami's chances of making the playoff are over, and Alabama's spot in the playoff is virtually assured unless there is an upset in the conference championships. Miami's recent losses, including a close defeat to Syracuse and Georgia Tech, were also noted as factors in the committee's decision.
