Turkey Blocks Access to Instagram Nationwide Over Censorship Dispute on Friday
Aug 2, 2024, 06:14 AM
Turkey has blocked access to Instagram nationwide. The decision, executed by the country's communications authority BTK on Friday, has not been accompanied by an official reason. However, it is widely speculated that the move is in response to Instagram's removal of posts and stories expressing condolences for Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. A senior Turkish official, Fahrettin Altun, had earlier criticized Instagram for censoring these posts, labeling the platform's actions as 'censorship'. The ban has left the social media platform's mobile app inaccessible across the country.
