Microsoft's New Data Centers Aim to Save 125 Million Liters of Water Annually
Dec 14, 2024, 07:33 AM
Microsoft Corp. has introduced a new generation of data centers that aim to significantly reduce water consumption for cooling purposes. The tech giant plans to implement a closed-loop system that recycles water, eliminating the need for fresh water supply once the system is initially filled during construction. This design is expected to save over 125 million liters of water per data center annually, which is equivalent to filling 50 Olympic-sized pools every year. The initiative is part of Microsoft's broader commitment to sustainability, as outlined in their Datacenter Community Pledge. The company has already begun testing this zero-water evaporation technology in new projects in Phoenix, Arizona, and Mt. Pleasant, Wisconsin, with plans to expand this approach across its global portfolio. The move is in response to growing concerns about water usage in data centers, especially in regions facing water stress.
