Three Trains Transport Lithium Batteries from Chongqing to Guangxi and Shanghai in China's First Rail Trial by BYD and CATL
Nov 24, 2024, 11:54 AM
In a significant development for China's electric vehicle sector, three trains loaded with lithium batteries have successfully completed their inaugural rail transportation from Chongqing, marking the first large-scale trial of this kind in the country. The trains, which departed from Chongqing Municipality and nearby Sichuan and Guizhou Provinces, reached their destinations in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Shanghai Municipality within the week. This initiative, undertaken by BYD and CATL, comes after both companies received approval from government regulators regarding the safety of lithium batteries transported in specialized containers. The use of rail freight is expected to reduce transportation costs for battery manufacturers. Additionally, BYD is collaborating with CAS Shenzhen on solid-state battery (SSB) and lithium-ion battery (LIB) materials, with recent public disclosures of two of BYD's SSB patents. The advancement in battery technology is part of a broader effort to integrate SSBs into electric vehicles, although further testing and validation are required.
