California Governor Signs AI Bills to Protect Actors, Curb Election Deepfakes; Fran Drescher Present
Sep 18, 2024, 01:50 AM
California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed into law two bills aimed at protecting actors and performers from unauthorized use of their digital likenesses by artificial intelligence. The legislation, signed at the SAG-AFTRA headquarters in Los Angeles with SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher present, ensures that any digital replicas of performers' voices or likenesses cannot be used without their consent. This move is part of a broader effort to address the evolving challenges posed by AI in the entertainment industry. Additionally, Newsom signed three bills targeting the use of AI-generated deepfakes in political ads, requiring social media platforms to remove or label such content to safeguard election integrity. One of the bills, AB 2602, was signed during the Dreamforce conference. The new laws are seen as a significant step towards regulating AI technology and protecting individuals' rights in the digital age.
