UK Government to Embed Domestic Abuse Specialists in 999 Control Rooms Under 'Raneem's Law' Pilot
Sep 20, 2024, 06:41 AM
The UK government has announced a new initiative to embed domestic abuse specialists in 999 control rooms across England and Wales. This measure, part of 'Raneem's Law', aims to halve the number of domestic abuse attacks over the next decade. The law is named in memory of Raneem Oudeh and her mother Khaola Saleem, who were victims of domestic violence. The initiative seeks to improve the police response to incidents of domestic abuse, ensuring faster and more effective intervention. Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips emphasized the need for this change, citing past inadequacies in police responses. The Home Office confirmed that some police forces will begin implementing these changes early next year. This new pilot and trial will address concerns about the early release of domestic abusers.
