The U.S. Senate has passed the TAKE IT DOWN Act, a bipartisan legislation aimed at addressing the issue of non-consensual intimate imagery, including explicit deepfakes, circulating online. The act criminalizes the publication of such content and mandates social media platforms to remove it within 48 hours upon notice. Concurrently, the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) has been revised with new changes led by X, to strengthen the bill while ensuring it does not infringe on free speech. KOSA aims to hold platforms accountable for harmful content affecting minors, recognizing the significant amount of time children spend online and the need for better safety measures. The changes to KOSA are intended to eliminate concerns that the bill could be weaponized to stifle expression.
