Powerful 7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Northern Chile Near San Pedro de Atacama

A powerful earthquake struck northern Chile near the Argentine border on Thursday. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the magnitude of the earthquake as 7.4, while other sources, including the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), recorded magnitudes ranging from 6.8 to 7.3. The earthquake's epicenter was located near San Pedro de Atacama, about 45 kilometers southeast of the village, and 164 miles east of the coastal city of Antofagasta. The quake was felt in neighboring countries, including Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina. Despite the severity of the earthquake, there were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage. The village of San Pedro de Atacama, where approximately 2 thousand people live, was near the epicenter.
