Colossal Biosciences, Texas' First Decacorn, Raises $200M for De-Extinction Efforts
Jan 15, 2025, 05:26 PM
Colossal Biosciences, a Dallas-based genetic engineering startup focused on de-extinction, has raised $200 million in a Series C funding round, bringing its total funding to $435 million since its inception in 2021. The latest round, led by TWG Global, values the company at $10.2 billion, making it the first startup in Texas to achieve decacorn status. The funding will support the expansion of Colossal's team, the development of new technologies, and the broadening of its de-extinction species list. The company's mission includes bringing back extinct species like the woolly mammoth, the dodo bird, and the thylacine, while also advancing genetic engineering technologies for conservation and human health care. Colossal has made significant progress in generating ancient genomes for these species and has developed an artificial uterus device for marsupial embryos. Additionally, the company is applying its de-extinction science to broader conservation efforts, including ancient DNA research, AI tools for species preservation, and exploring revenue streams like biodiversity credits.
