New Study Links COVID-19 Molecular Mimicry to MIS-C via SNX8 Protein
Aug 7, 2024, 09:08 PM
A new study published in Nature has uncovered a potential cause for multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), a severe condition linked to COVID-19. The research, conducted by a collaboration including UCSF, St. Jude, and Boston Children's Hospital, with insights from CZ Biohub President Joe DeRisi, reveals that molecular mimicry may be responsible for the condition. Specifically, the study found that a sequence in the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein resembles a human protein called SNX8. This similarity triggers the production of autoantibodies and cross-reactive T cells, leading to an autoimmune response. Notably, one-third of kids with MIS-C had autoantibodies for SNX8. The findings suggest that this mechanism might explain some cases of MIS-C, though other cases may involve different immune system responses. The study provides a foundation for developing better diagnostics and treatments for MIS-C and similar autoimmune diseases.
