Hong Kong Court Upholds Convictions of Jimmy Lai, Others for 2019 Protest
Aug 12, 2024, 03:22 AM
Hong Kong's top court has unanimously dismissed the appeal by media tycoon Jimmy Lai and six other pro-democracy leaders, including Lee Cheuk-yan, Margaret Ng, Long Hair, Cyd Ho, Albert Ho, and Martin Lee, to overturn their convictions for participating in an unauthorized assembly in 2019. The convictions relate to a protest on August 18, 2019, which saw 1.7 million people take to the streets. The decision comes amid increased scrutiny of Hong Kong's judiciary, following a series of departures by foreign judges.
