FDA Authorizes First OTC COVID-19/Flu Test Outside Emergency Use
Oct 8, 2024, 04:22 PM
The FDA has granted marketing authorization for the first over-the-counter combination COVID-19 and flu test for use without a prescription. This test, which uses a nasal swab sample, allows individuals experiencing respiratory symptoms to obtain at-home results for both COVID-19 and flu. The authorization, announced on Monday, marks a significant development as it is the first such test approved outside of emergency use. Households nationwide can also now order four free COVID-19 tests that can detect current variants and be used through at least the end of 2024. This initiative aims to encourage testing before holiday gatherings, especially as we enter flu season.
