Meta Agrees to $1.4 Billion Settlement with Texas Over Biometric Data Misuse in Largest Privacy Case
Jul 30, 2024, 02:49 PM
Meta Platforms has agreed to a $1.4 billion settlement with the state of Texas to resolve allegations that the company illegally used facial recognition technology to collect biometric data from millions of Texans without their consent. This settlement, announced by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, marks the largest ever obtained from an action brought by a single state. The lawsuit, filed in 2022, accused Meta, the parent company of Facebook, of capturing and using personal biometric data without the required authorization. This historic settlement aims to stop Meta's practice of unauthorized data collection and protect Texans' privacy rights, making it the largest privacy settlement to date.
