FDA Monitors as Consumer Reports Finds High Lead Levels in 12 of 36 Cinnamon Products
Sep 12, 2024, 05:00 PM
A recent Consumer Reports analysis has found elevated levels of lead in 12 out of 36 ground cinnamon products and spice blends. The report, published on Thursday, has prompted the FDA to actively monitor ground cinnamon supplies and alert the public about certain products. The study tested various products, including garam masala and five-spice powder, and found that one teaspoon of some contaminated products could be harmful. Some companies have already begun removing the affected products from shelves. Whole Foods and McCormick were noted for having very low levels of lead in their products. The findings have raised concerns about food safety, especially following incidents of tainted cinnamon applesauce poisoning dozens of children last year. The products tested over the metal limit set by the American Spice Trade Association and were sold across the tristate area.
