India to Add 15.4 GW of New Coal Power Capacity, Most in Nine Years, Amid Surging Demand
Jun 19, 2024, 11:19 AM
India is set to see a significant increase in coal-fired electricity capacity this year as the country rushes to meet surging power demand. The world's most populous nation expects to add 15.4 gigawatts of new coal power capacity in the year through March 2025, marking the largest increase in nearly a decade. Currently, India has 28.5 gigawatts of coal power under construction and plans to award more than 50 gigawatts for construction over the next three years. The rapid economic growth and high power demand have prolonged the country's reliance on coal, despite global calls for energy transition and climate action. India's coal-based power demand is at an all-time high, and the country will add more new coal power capacity than it has in nine years.
