VisitU.S. Orders TSMC to Halt 7nm+ AI Chip Shipments to China from Nov. 11
Nov 10, 2024, 06:54 AM
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world's largest contract chipmaker, has been ordered by the U.S. Department of Commerce to halt shipments of advanced chips to Chinese customers starting November 11. This decision targets chips with 7nm or more advanced designs, often used in artificial intelligence applications, including AI processors and GPUs. The move comes after reports of TSMC chips reaching Huawei, a company under U.S. trade restrictions, through a Chinese chip designer named Sophgo. TSMC has notified its Chinese clients that it will suspend production of these advanced AI chips, complying with U.S. export restrictions.
