Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso Form Confederation of Sahel States Alliance, Also Known as Sahel Military Alliance
Jul 6, 2024, 05:39 PM
The military leaders of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have signed a charter establishing a confederation named the Confederation of Sahel States Alliance. This marks the first joint meeting of the three military leaders since they overthrew the civilian-led governments in their respective countries. The summit, held in Niamey, Niger's capital, aimed at deeper integration of member states and formalized their alliance in response to opposition from neighboring countries. The leaders also ruled out a return to the West African economic bloc ECOWAS. The confederation is also referred to as the Sahel Military Alliance.
