Kenya Ordered to Pay Sh10 Million in Verdict for Slain Journalist Arshad Sharif
Jul 8, 2024, 09:31 AM
The High Court in Kenya has ruled that the killing of Pakistani journalist Shaheed Arshad Sharif by Kenyan police in 2022 was unconstitutional. The verdict, delivered on the 8th of July 2024, ordered the Government of Kenya to pay Sh10 million as compensation to Sharif's family. Justice Stella Mutuku found that the killing, which occurred on October 23, 2022, violated Sharif's right to life, right to equal benefit and protection of the law, and right to dignity. The court also noted that Sharif was subjected to torture, and the Attorney General cannot escape responsibility.
