EU and UK Sanction Iran's Airlines and Military Over Missile Transfers to Russia, Attack on Israel
Oct 14, 2024, 12:56 PM
The European Union and the United Kingdom have imposed new sanctions on Iran in response to its transfer of ballistic missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and missile components to Russia, as well as Iran's alleged attack on Israel on October 1. The EU's sanctions target seven individuals and seven organizations, including Iranian airlines Iran Air, Mahan Air, and Saha Airlines, procurement firms, and missile fuel producers involved in supplying drones and missiles to Russia and to armed groups undermining peace and security in the Middle East. The UK has added nine new designations under its Iran sanctions regime, focusing on senior figures in the Islamic Republic of Iran Army and Iran's Air Force, and organizations linked to Iran's ballistic and cruise missile development. Britain's Foreign Office stated that the sanctions are a response to Iran's attack on Israel. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the adoption of the sanctions and called for further action, stating that Iran's support for Russia's aggression against Ukraine is unacceptable and must stop.
