Judge Dismisses Alec Baldwin's Manslaughter Case With Prejudice Over Withheld Evidence
Jul 12, 2024, 10:19 PM
A New Mexico judge has dismissed the involuntary manslaughter case against actor Alec Baldwin in the middle of the trial. The dismissal came after Baldwin's defense team filed a motion arguing that prosecutors had withheld crucial evidence, specifically a batch of bullets, from the defense. The judge, Mary Marlowe Sommer, ruled that the case could not proceed due to this prosecutorial misconduct, and the charges were dismissed with prejudice, meaning they cannot be refiled. The case stemmed from the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie 'Rust' in 2021. Baldwin was seen breaking down in tears as the judge announced the dismissal. Additionally, co-prosecutor Erlinda Johnson resigned amid the trial.
