Philippines Detects China's 'Monster Ship' in EEZ, BRP Cabra and BRP Cape Engano Near 2nd Thomas Shoal
Jul 6, 2024, 11:29 PM
The Philippines Coast Guard (PCG) has detected the movements of China's largest coastguard vessel, the 165-meter 'monster ship' (CCG-5901), using Canada's Dark Vessel Detection system. The vessel departed from Hainan on July 1st and entered the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). This incident has heightened tensions between the two countries, with the Philippines' military chief stating that its forces would defend themselves with the same level of force if they come under assault from China again. The PCG spokesperson, Jay Tarriela, emphasized that the Philippines would not be intimidated by China's actions. Additionally, the Philippines is considering purchasing faster and more lethal fighter jets, including US F-16s and Sweden's JAS-39s, to bolster its defense capabilities amid ongoing tensions with Beijing. The situation remains tense as China's coastguard and maritime militia vessels continue to shadow Philippine Coast Guard ships, BRP Cabra and BRP Cape Engano, near the 2nd Thomas Shoal, approximately 14 nautical miles east, with CCG 5203 and at least 6 vessels.
