WHO Declares Mpox Clade Ib a Global Health Emergency as Cases Emerge in Thailand and Sweden

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the mpox outbreak in Africa a Public Health Emergency of International Concern due to a new clade Ib spreading rapidly in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and other African countries. This declaration aims to boost global response, fund healthcare, and enhance safety measures. Mpox cases in Africa surged by 160% in 2024, with over 15,600 cases reported, primarily in the DRC, which accounts for 96% of all cases and 97% of deaths, including roughly 570 deaths. The outbreak has prompted countries like Kenya to initiate vaccination efforts, while Asian countries, including Thailand and Sweden, are ramping up border controls and surveillance as the virus spreads. Experts emphasize the need for vaccine equity, as most vaccine supplies are concentrated in wealthier nations, leaving African countries vulnerable. The WHO's declaration underscores the urgent need for coordinated international action to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread.
