USA Wins 65th International Math Olympiad, Beating China by 2 Points
Jul 21, 2024, 06:42 AM
The United States has won the 65th International Math Olympiad (IMO), the world's largest proof-based math competition for high school students. The competition, which spans nine hours and includes six challenging questions, saw the U.S. team outperform China by two points. This victory is notable as it highlights the individual talents and efforts of American students, despite the country's mid-level ranking in global PISA scores. The U.S. team consisted of six students: Jordan Lefkowitz, Krishna Pothapragada, Jessica Wan, Alexander Wang, Qiao (Tiger) Zhang, and Linus Tang, with Wan being a notable female participant. India placed fourth, just one point behind Korea. Additionally, China's Haojia Shi achieved a perfect score for the second consecutive year, becoming the seventh person to do so in the competition's history. The win also underscores the positive impact of immigration on the U.S. education system.
