El Capitan Named World's Most Powerful Supercomputer at SC24 with 1.742 Exaflops
Nov 18, 2024, 06:02 PM
El Capitan, a supercomputer housed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and powered by AMD, has been named the most powerful supercomputer in the world at the SC24 conference. With a performance of 1.742 exaflops, El Capitan surpasses Frontier, making it the second exascale supercomputer for HPE and AMD. The 64th Top500 list also reveals that there are now three exascale systems officially recognized. Additionally, HPC6 at Eni has entered the Top500 at number five, and Tuolumne, a smaller version of El Capitan, rounds out the top ten. El Capitan, which features a fanless direct liquid-cooled design, supports AI-driven research at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
