Australia Signs A$7 Billion Deal for US Missiles Amid 'Greatest Arms Race' Since WWII
Oct 22, 2024, 10:47 AM
Australia has announced a A$7 billion ($4.7 billion) agreement to acquire US-made long-range missiles, including SM-2 IIIC and SM-6 systems, to strengthen its defense capabilities amidst growing regional tensions. The procurement, approved following a 2021 Foreign Military Sales case, aims to counter China's recent investments in anti-ship ballistic missile technologies. Defense Industry Minister Pat Conroy described the move as essential in response to 'the greatest arms race' in the region since World War II, and Defense Minister Richard Marles highlighted the missiles as 'the most advanced air and missile defence weapons in the world'. Experts have noted that the deal could raise concerns over regional stability.
