US, UK, EU Sign First Legally Binding AI Safety Treaty in Vilnius

The United States, United Kingdom, and European Union have signed the first legally binding international treaty on artificial intelligence. The treaty, signed on September 5 at the Council of Europe’s convention in Vilnius, aims to establish global standards for AI technology. This landmark agreement emphasizes AI safety, the protection of human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. Israel and several other countries have also joined as signatories. The treaty was drafted over two years by more than 50 countries and is open for additional countries to sign. The UK’s Lord Chancellor Shabana Mahmood and other European leaders have highlighted the treaty's alignment with the European AI Act and its significance in promoting responsible AI innovation.
