EU to Impose Up to 45% Tariffs on Chinese EVs from Oct 30; China Launches WTO Challenge
Oct 29, 2024, 04:36 PM
The European Union will impose additional tariffs on electric vehicles imported from China, effective from October 30, with rates peaking at 45%. The duties, which will be imposed for five years, are in response to concerns over unfair subsidies provided to Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers. The tariffs are in addition to the existing 10% import duty. Negotiations between the EU and China to avert or reduce the tariffs have failed, leading to increased tensions and a risk of retaliation from Beijing. China's Ministry of Commerce has expressed strong opposition, warning that separate negotiations with individual firms undermine mutual trust. China has initiated proceedings at the World Trade Organization in response to the EU's decision. The European Commission has set individual duty rates for various Chinese producers, including BYD at 14.5%, NIO at 17%, SAIC's MG brand at 21.7%, while Tesla faces an additional 7.8% tariff. Germany's Economy Ministry has indicated a preference for a negotiated solution and intends to continue advocating for one.
