DOT Launches Probe into Four Largest U.S. Airlines' Frequent Flyer Programs on Thursday
Sep 5, 2024, 10:34 PM
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has launched an inquiry into the frequent flyer and rewards programs of the four largest U.S. airlines: Delta Air Lines Inc., American Airlines Group Inc., United Airlines Holdings Inc., and Southwest Airlines Co. The investigation, announced on Thursday, aims to determine whether these programs are fair and transparent for consumers. The DOT is scrutinizing practices such as rewards devaluation, hidden pricing, junk fees, and the potential reduction in competition and choice. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized the importance of ensuring that these programs are transparent and fair for consumers. This action follows a letter from Senator Dick Durbin expressing concerns over unfair and deceptive practices in airline loyalty programs. The DOT has also requested reports on policies and fees from the airlines.
