Six-Time Super Bowl Champion Bill Belichick, 72, Officially Named UNC Head Coach
Dec 11, 2024, 08:24 PM
Bill Belichick, the legendary 72-year-old six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach, is finalizing a deal to become the next head football coach at the University of North Carolina. UNC recently parted ways with head coach Mack Brown, 73, and is set to replace him with Belichick, who will become the oldest active head coach in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Discussions have been ongoing, with financial terms being worked out over the past 24 hours, including UNC increasing its name, image, and likeness (NIL) resources from $4 million to $20 million to secure Belichick's appointment. Among the issues being ironed out are the potential role for his son, Steve Belichick, currently the defensive coordinator for Washington, as well as Belichick's salary, staff resources, and reporting structure. The university's Board of Trustees will need to approve the deal in an emergency meeting. Belichick's move to Chapel Hill, dubbed 'Chapel Bill,' has been officially confirmed by multiple sources and is expected to have significant implications for the college football landscape. His father, Steve Belichick, had connections to UNC, having served as an assistant coach there in the 1950s.
