Cruise to Resume California Bay Area Operations with Human Drivers Nearly a Year After Pedestrian Crash

Cruise, the autonomous vehicle company, is set to resume operations in California's Bay Area nearly a year after a pedestrian crash involving one of its driverless taxis. The incident, which occurred in downtown San Francisco, resulted in a woman being struck and dragged 20 feet. In response to the crash, state regulators had pulled Cruise's driverless fleet from the streets. The company will now deploy several manual mapping vehicles in Sunnyvale and Mountain View, with plans to progress to supervised testing with up to five autonomous vehicles later this fall. This move is seen as a significant step forward for Cruise as it continues to work closely with regulatory authorities. The initial deployment will involve human drivers mapping two South Bay Cities.
