Egypt and Jordan Urge Assad to Leave Syria as Rebels Seize Hama and Aleppo—WSJ Reports
Dec 6, 2024, 08:43 PM
According to reports from the Wall Street Journal, Egyptian and Jordanian officials have urged Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to leave the country and form a government in exile. Assad has reportedly sought weapons and intelligence assistance from countries including the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan, and Iraq, but his requests have so far been refused. Additionally, Assad has called on Turkey to intervene to stop rebel advances. Syrian rebels have seized control of Hama and Aleppo and are advancing toward Homs, posing a significant threat to Assad's regime. Assad's family, including his wife and children, have reportedly traveled to Russia, while his brothers-in-law have gone to the UAE. However, official Jordanian sources have denied the WSJ report, stating that no such advice was given to Assad.
