Asma al-Assad Gravely Ill With Leukemia in Moscow, Given 50% Chance of Survival
Dec 25, 2024, 08:00 PM
Asma al-Assad, the British-born wife of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, is severely ill with leukemia and has been given a 50/50 chance of survival by doctors, according to reports from The Telegraph. She is currently in isolation in Moscow to prevent infection, where the Assad family sought refuge after the fall of the Syrian regime. Asma al-Assad was previously treated for breast cancer and announced in 2019 that she was cancer-free after a year of treatment. The leukemia diagnosis was first announced by the Syrian presidency in May, and it is believed to have returned after a period of remission. Her father, Fawaz Akhras, a respected cardiologist, has been caring for her in Moscow and is described as 'heartbroken' by sources close to the family.
