LaMonica McIver Wins New Jersey Special Election by 65.2 Points, Fills Late Rep. Payne's Seat
Sep 19, 2024, 12:26 AM
Democrat LaMonica McIver has won the special election in New Jersey's 10th Congressional District, defeating Republican Carmen Bucco. The election was held to fill the seat left vacant after the death of Rep. Donald Payne Jr. earlier this year. McIver, who serves as the Newark Council President, becomes the eighth Congresswoman in New Jersey's history. Early and mail-in votes showed McIver leading with 87% to 9%, and she maintained a significant lead throughout the counting process. Polls closed at 8:00 PM ET, and by 8:07 pm ET, McIver was projected to win. By the end of the election night, McIver led by 65.2 points, surpassing the margin by which President Joe Biden won the district in 2020. At one point, McIver led by 69.3 points. The election saw a notable swing towards Democrats, particularly in highly educated, high-income white precincts.
