33,000 Boeing Workers Strike, Halting 737 MAX Production for First Time Since 2008
Sep 13, 2024, 07:15 AM
Boeing's West Coast factory workers have voted to strike after rejecting a proposed labor contract. The machinists, represented by IAM District 751, overwhelmingly voted against the contract with 94.6% rejecting the offer and 96% approving the strike. The proposed contract included a 25% wage increase over four years, a $3,000 signing bonus, and a pledge to build Boeing's next commercial jet in the Seattle area. However, workers demanded a 40% pay increase and the restoration of their pensions. The strike, involving over 33,000 workers, will halt production of Boeing's best-selling 737 MAX jet and other aircraft, adding to the company's ongoing production delays and financial challenges. Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg had urged union members not to strike, warning that it would jeopardize the company's recovery. The strike began at midnight on September 13, marking Boeing's first major labor action since 2008. The work stoppage is expected to significantly impact Boeing's financial performance, with estimates of a $1.3 billion free cash flow hit per month.
