Reformist Masoud Pezeshkian Wins Iran's Presidential Runoff with 16,384,403 Votes (53.6%)
Jul 6, 2024, 03:19 AM
Masoud Pezeshkian, a 69-year-old reformist candidate and former health minister, has won Iran's presidential runoff election, defeating hardliner Saeed Jalili. The election saw a voter turnout of approximately 49.8%, an increase from the record-low turnout of 39.92% in the first round. Pezeshkian secured 16,384,403 votes, representing 53.6% of the total, while Jalili garnered 13,538,179 votes, or 44.3%. Out of a total of 30,530,157 votes cast, Pezeshkian's victory marks the first reformist presidency in Iran since 2005, signaling a potential shift in the country's domestic and foreign policies. His campaign promises included outreach to the West and easing enforcement of Iran's mandatory headscarf law.
