Elon Musk's X Wins Ninth Circuit Appeal to Block Part of California Content Moderation Law
Sep 4, 2024, 05:43 PM
Elon Musk's social media platform, X, has won an appeal to partially block a California law that required social media companies to disclose their content moderation and hate speech policies. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled that the law likely violates the First Amendment. The decision, made by a three-judge panel, reverses a lower court ruling, granting X a preliminary injunction against the law. The law, enacted in 2022, mandated that large social media companies publish their policies for combating disinformation, harassment, hate speech, and extremism, and submit reports to the state Attorney General.
