TSMC Begins 4nm Chip Production in Arizona with CHIPS Act Support, Serving Apple and AMD
Jan 12, 2025, 07:37 PM
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) has commenced production of advanced 4-nanometer chips at its Fab 21 facility in Phoenix, Arizona. This marks the first time such cutting-edge semiconductor technology has been manufactured on U.S. soil. According to U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, the chips produced in Arizona are on par in yield and quality with those manufactured in Taiwan. The facility is currently producing chips for U.S. customers, including Apple and AMD, with products such as the A16 Bionic chip for iPhones and the S9 chip for Apple Watches. The Arizona plant is part of a broader U.S. initiative under the CHIPS and Science Act to bolster domestic semiconductor production and reduce reliance on overseas manufacturing. TSMC has received $6.6 billion in U.S. government grants and up to $5 billion in loan guarantees for this project. The facility's current production capacity is approximately 10,000 wafer starts per month, with plans to expand capacity and introduce more advanced nodes, including 2-nanometer technology, by 2028.
