Blue Jays Sign All-Star Jeff Hoffman to Three-Year, $33 Million Deal as New Closer
Jan 11, 2025, 12:58 AM
The Toronto Blue Jays have signed right-handed pitcher Jeff Hoffman to a three-year contract worth $33 million, with potential incentives that could increase the total value to $39 million. Hoffman, who was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the first round in 2014, returns to the team after a successful stint as a reliever with the Philadelphia Phillies. In 2024, he earned his first All-Star selection, posting a 2.17 ERA over 68 appearances, striking out 89 batters and walking 16 in 66.1 innings. The Blue Jays plan to utilize Hoffman as their closer, a role he will assume following the departure of Jordan Romano to the Phillies. This signing represents the largest contract the Blue Jays have given to a reliever during the tenure of General Manager Ross Atkins and team president Mark Shapiro. Prior to signing with Toronto, Hoffman had agreed to a three-year, $40 million deal with the Baltimore Orioles, but the agreement fell through due to concerns over his right shoulder during a physical examination. To make room for Hoffman on the roster, the Blue Jays designated right-hander Brett de Geus for assignment. The team has also signed Yimi Garcia and acquired Andres Gimenez in a trade with the Cleveland Guardians, further strengthening their bullpen and defense.
