Fire at World's Largest Lithium Battery Plant in California Forces 1,500 to Evacuate
Jan 17, 2025, 08:23 AM
A fire erupted shortly after 3 p.m. on Thursday at the Moss Landing Power Plant in California, prompting evacuation orders for approximately 1,500 residents in nearby areas, including zones MRY-B047 and MRY-B053. The blaze involves a battery storage facility owned by Vistra Energy, one of the largest lithium battery storage facilities in the world, housing tens of thousands of lithium batteries used to store electricity from solar power for use at night. Authorities have closed Highway 1 in both directions and issued health warnings due to hazardous toxins released into the air. Monterey County Sheriff's Commander Andres Rosas reported that about 40% of the building has been affected by the fire. Residents have been advised to close windows and doors and turn off air systems. Emergency crews are working to contain the fire, and the cause is under investigation.
